3 Lip Conditions That Are A Sign Of Sickness

0

Lips may seem like such a small part of our bodies that it is easy to overlook any warning signs that they may present. The same way they can signify a problem lurking in your body, they may help you realize what your body needs.

Your lips are one of the most sensitive parts of your face. The thin skin is highly susceptible to harsh environmental factors like exposure to the sun and chemicals that normally wouldn’t affect the skin on the rest of your body as much.

Similarly, your lips can highlight an issue on the inside. Ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic experts didn’t have it wrong when they said your lips could tell a lot about your health. The main symptoms for unhealthy lip conditions are:

  • Dryness and chapping or cracking
  • Swelling
  • The appearance of sores and blisters
  • Itchiness and irritation
  • Pain described as burning, stinging, sharp, throbbing or dull

Depending on the situation, these symptoms can be mild or extreme. If any of these symptoms get you alert, maybe it is time you visited your doctor. Finding out the cause and duration of any of these discomforts can help eliminate them or uncover another hidden problem.

Which Lip Conditions Can Signal An Ailment?

  1. Blisters

Blisters are never a good sign. If you have eliminated the possibility of scalding or a reaction to a toxin, lip blisters could be cold sores. If you have herpes (type 1), cold sores are part of the package.

Tingling, irritation, and itching on your lip before the appearance of the blister means there’s a high chance you have the herpes virus. Since cold sores are very contagious, take care not to touch other items when you’ve touched the infected area.

Also, ‘fever blisters’ from the herpes virus may appear on your lip after you experience a negative event. Anything from a fever, mental, emotional trauma, to environmental factors can lead to a blister where itching begins.

  1. Pale, Blue or Brown Lips

If your blood sugar is normal and you get enough sunlight, pale lips could mean you have anemia. They may take on a blue hue during the cold weather. However, a bluish color on your lips could mean a serious heart or respiratory problem.

Your lips are red because your blood vessels are right beneath the thin skin. If your face doesn’t highlight an issue with your blood, your lips will.

On the other hand, while some medication may discolor your lips, talk to your doctor if a flat brown (or black) spot on your lip makes your uneasy. It could be a sign of lentigo. Dark patches on your mouth’s mucosal lining could warn you of Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome.

  1. Allergy

Allergies can range from mild to dangerous, and your mouth could say something about it. Tenderness some redness on your lips could mean you are mildly allergic to something you ingested or applied on your lips.

However, if you notice swelling, followed by hives, itchiness or pain, you could be experiencing a severe allergic reaction that may be detrimental to your health if it causes swelling inside your mouth and throat.

Conclusion

Experiencing lip conditions doesn’t always mean you are on the verge of an ailment, sometimes all you need to do is take proper care of your lips, and the discomfort will go away. Either way, you could always talk to your doctor to rule any risks out.
